Chikungunya cases are surging in the UK, with infections more than doubling recently. Health officials are warning returning travellers and British tourists to take precautions against mosquito bites.
The virus, transmitted through mosquito bites, causes fever and severe joint pain – sometimes lasting for months. Symptoms can also include headache, muscle pain, and rash. Over 70 cases have been detected in the UK, primarily among individuals who recently travelled abroad.
Chikungunya ("bending over disease" in Swahili, referring to the posture people adopt due to joint pain) isn't usually fatal, but it can be debilitating. The UK Health Security Agency is urging vigilance, advising people to use insect repellent and cover exposed skin.
Protecting yourself is key. Wear long sleeves and trousers, use mosquito nets, and eliminate standing water where mosquitoes breed. Stay informed and be aware of the risks when travelling to affected regions.
